Earthquake
Peru is in an active earthquake zone. The most recent strike took place in Ica province and damages extended to Lima, Paracas and Pisco.
The Ubinas Volcano (in the north of Moquegua Department) has increased volcanic activity and a State of Emergency is in effect. Travellers in the affected areas should follow the advice of local authorities and monitor the media for information.
Dangerous areas
Areas bordering Colombia are dangerous because of drug traffic, areas bordering Ecuador are planted with land mines.
Isolated areas in the Southern Highlands including San Martin, Huanuco, Pasco, Junin, Ucayali, Huancavelica, Ayacucho and Apurimac sympathise Shining Path guerilla movement and can be dangerous. |
