You may know the Dutch by their tulips, wooden shoes (clogs) and windmills, but the small monarchy of Netherlands has much more to offer, from the cannabis coffee shops in Amsterdam’s Red Light district to the traditional fishing villages on the North Sea coastline.
The flat landscapes make The Netherlands a great place for cycling, trekking, sailing or ice skating, but don’t worry, there are plenty of museums to see for all you culture lovers out there, as well as many architectural bijoux, some portrayed in the miniature city of Madurodam.
You can enjoy the Summer Carnival in Rotterdam or the NorthSea Jazz festival, but in order to get a taste of the true local spirit, try the festivities held for Queen’s Day – you’ll have plenty of fun watching authentic Dutch games or browsing the free markets, just be sure to dress in orange for a perfect blend amongst the locals. |
