The climate in Italy is highly diverse and can be far from the stereotypical Mediterranean climate depending on the location.
The coastal areas and most of the peninsula south of Florence generally fit the Mediterranean stereotype, with altitudes creating steep changes between summer and winter.
The interior higher altitudes and valleys, in the Alpes, particularly during the winter months when the higher altitudes tend to be cold, wet, and often snowy.
The coastal regions enjoy mild winters and warm and generally dry summers, although lowland valleys can be quite hot in summer because of the sirocco, the hot and humid African wind that affects regions south of Rome.
When to go
If you love winter sports, the best month are December-March in Alpes.
The best time to visit the rest of the country is May to June and autumn (October-November).
During these seasons, the climate is generaly pleasant, not too many tourists and scenery is beautiful. If possible, avoid hot summer months and specially August because most of the Italians are on vacation (and also their shops and restaurants).
