All nationals need visa to visit Iran and ussualy is pretty difficul to obtain it (the prices can be pretty high and the regulations very strict). You should apply for a visa with few weeks before travelling date to be sure you will obtain it before deadline.
There are many tour operators that can help you with online visa applications.
At present the Iranian Foreign Ministry does not allow American passport holders to travel to Iran independently. Americans are required to travel on escorted tours; either as part of a tour group, or a tailor made individual tour. An exact itinerary, to which you must adhere, is compulsory.
Admission is refused to holders of passports containing a visa (valid or expired) for Israel.
