South of Turkey, in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, lays the island of Cyprus, best known around the world as the birthplace of Aphrodite. Although split between its Greek and Turkish inhabitants – mostly visible in Nicosia, the only capital in the world divided by force – the island has many tourist attractions to offer, from the fancy resorts of Ayia Napa with their fine sanded beaches hidden in cozy bays, to the ancient monasteries in the Troodos region, dating back to the Byzantine period.
There are many antiquities sites to see, spread around the island, from Roman ruins to the old Venetian fortress walls of Nicosia. And for the most energetic of you, plenty of skiing, hiking and trekking opportunities await in the mountains. |
