South of Turkey, in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, lays the island of Cyprus, best known around the world as the birthplace of Aphrodite. Although split between its Greek and Turkish inhabitants – mostly visible in Nicosia, the only capital in the world divided by force – the island has many tourist attractions to offer, from the fancy resorts of Ayia Napa with their fine sanded beaches hidden in cozy bays, to the ancient monasteries in the Troodos region, dating back to the Byzantine period.
For centuries, Cyprus was a crossing path between Asia, Europe and Africa and because of that, many characteristics of antique civilizations are still to be seen - there are remains of Roman theatres and villas, Byzantine churches and monasteries, Crusader castles and pre-historic habitats.
Its main activities are tourism, clothing and craft exports and merchant shipping, and it is a place very famous for its traditional crafts, which include embroidery, pottery and copper work. If you ever go there, try the local dishes - meze, halloumi cheese and zivania will make your taste buds feel like heaven.
Do not worry if you do not know where you will stay, because there are many fabulous accommodations all over the island. Moreover, most important is that all these accommodations are built so they would suit everyone's pocket.
And for the most energetic of you, plenty of skiing, hiking and trekking opportunities await in the mountains.
