You can find Bulgaria in the eastern half of one of the most diverse ethno-linguistic regions of Europe, the Balkan Peninsula.
Birthplace of the Cyrillic alphabet, Bulgaria had a major cultural influence over the Eastern Orthodox Slavic world – you can still see its traces in the monasteries of Rila and Rozhen, or in the old city of Nessebar.
Not much of a church passionate? The spa resorts can offer a delightful (and quite cheap!) alternative. Not the self-pampering type, either? Then you can enjoy a nice swim in the Black Sea, a ski vacation in the Pirin Mountains or a journey back in time in the streets and museums of Koprivshtitsa – home of true ethnographical treasures.
Feeling more like an urban life addict? The capital, Sofia, has a rich nightlife to offer, in between pubs, restaurants, night clubs and Bulgarian traditional taverns, while the coast resort of Varna is home to many international arts festivals, from jazz to poetry, folk and ballet. |
